-global positioning system:- systems that accurately determine the precise location of something
- GPS in the united states includes 3 elements
- satellites placed in predetermined orbits
- tracking stations to monitor and control satellites
- receiver that can locate at least 4 satellites, figure out its distance from earth and use the information to calculate its precise location
applications:
- tum by tum directions in vehicle
- navigational aid to pilots and captains
- provide location for social media etc.
why is each point on earth unique:
- a place is a specific location on earth distinguished by a particular characteristic
- describing the features of a place is an essential building block for geographers to explain similarities and changes around
- geogrophers describe a place on earth by identifying its location, the position that something occupies on earth
today in class we also got three more maps of the world and had to label them sort of like the last time, pinpointing places like john carrol, chicago, and other major cities in the world!!
