today in class we didn't really do much. we started off the class by introducing the three shadows that we had today by their shadow hosts. then mr schick just looked at our blogs and updated our grades and called us up to his desk one by one to review the blogs! while we were waiting we were allowed to do any other homework that we had to do for the day. then once i was finished what i was doing, i talked to my friends kam, mia, lily, and lillys shadow miranda. i got a lot of stuff done today in class even though we didnt really learn anything new.

septemeber 25
today in class we talked about maps of the world, all the different kinds and why they are all so different. then after that we colored and labeled out maps for references!!
--> 24 time zones; 15 degrees wide each
the international date line..
-located at 180 degrees longitude

notes from september 25
map scale-->
- level of detail and amount
- written scale: example 1 inch= 1 mile
- graphic scale: usually consists of a marked bar line
scientific method-->
- four types of distortion:
1. shape of an area can be distorted
2. distance between points may become increased or decreased
3. relative size of different areas can be altered
4. direction between points can be distorted
earths spherical shape causes distortion when drawing it on a flat piece of paper
geographic grid
a system of imaginary areas drawn in a grid pattern on earths surface
--> meridians are arcs drawn between the north and south poles. each is numbered, according to a system that is known as longitude. range from 0 degrees to 180 degrees east or west longitude
--> parallels are arcs drawn parallel to the equator and at right angles to meridians. each is numbered according to a system= latitude; range from 0 degrees to 90 degrees north or south of the equator
--> points on earths surface can be communicated by referring points of longitude and latitude intersections, example is denver, colorado's location is 40 north latitude and 105 west longitude
--> further accuracy can be achieved by dividing each degree onto 60 minutes and minutes into 60 seconds. example is denver, colorado's state capitol building is 39 42' 2" north latitude
telling time
--> earth as a sphere is divided into 360 degrees of longitude- divide 360 degrees by the twenty four diffident time zones ( meaning one for each hour of the day)
--> greenwich mean time (GMT) is...
located at the prime meridian( 0 degrees longitude) and passes through royal observatory at greenwich (which is located in england) master reference time for all points on earth

mercator map--> general map, used often
this is the map that everybody knows and learns from, but it is incorrect. this map makes certain countries look a lot bigger than they are and it makes you wonder where places really actually are.
--> what if the northern hemisphere was on the southern hemisphere?

class notes 9/19
learning outcomes-
1.1.1: explain differences between early maps and contemporary maps
1.1.2: describe the role of map scale and projections and making maps
1.1.3: explain how latitude and longitude are used to locate points
geography--> the study of where things are fund on the earths surface and the reasons for their
locations and why any are there
human geographers:
1. where are people and activities found on the earth?
2. why are they found there?
--> a map is 2 dimensional or flat scale model of earths surface, or portion of it
--> cartography is the science of mapmaking
a map serves two purposes:
1. as a reference tool to identify an objects absolute at relative locations
2. as a communication tool to covey thew distribution of human activities or features

first test
today in class Mr. Schick told us that we were going to have a text next class (Tuesday, September 18) He told us some important information things that were going to be on the test such as multiple choice, short answers, and one essay question about "The unexamined life is not worth living." I am going to make sure that i study this weekend so that i do good on the test!! i also hope that you do not move Lily, Julia, Kam or Mia away from the back. i like having them there and i promise that i won't talk to any of them. i will face front and focus and listen so that i learn and know what will be on tests so that i can do good on them.

notes from sep. 13
socrotes met with young students in workshops just outside the agora. his method: ask a series of questions to determine their underlying beliefs.
controversy: Athens was a great city which attracted brilliant thinkers. visitors from all over the world came that shared all of their knowledge. this was often at odds with traditional teaching that got people thinking and questioning. visitors from all over the world shared their knowledge.
the trial:
-->he was charged with two crimes:
1. corruption of Athens youth
2. impiety( not believing in the gods of the state)
--> his defense:
1. "its my job to be gadfly to the lazy, sluggish horse that is Athens."
2. "i should actually be rewarded with free dinners for life."
--> how this all worked out for him:
1. a jury of 500 male citizens found him guilty in 279
2. sentenced to death by drinking poison and hemlock
3. he had the opportunity to escape but he refused
socrates tried to prove his loyalty to the athenian democracy by not escaping when he had the chance. they tried to make socrates look like how important he was.
an idiot in athenian democracy was someone who was characterized by self centeredness and concerned almost exclusively with private and public affairs.

a message to garcia
The essay "A Message to Garcia" was written by a man named Elbert Hubbard. In my opinion, this essay was very inspiring because it talked about the value of humans and their worth ethics etc. i feel like some people really need to read this because people just decide they don't want to do their work anymore because they are lazy and don't want to do anything. people need to go out of their comfort zones and not only that but just adventure in general. This relates to me because now that I'm at a new school and in high school, i want to adventure and do things that i don't usually like going to dances and football games ands stuff like that, but i don't give up and i believe I'm gonna have a lot of fun.

my first day of school at jc
my first day of school was defiantly now how i expected it to be. Yesterday was technically my first real day, but i consider orientation as my first day. I met a lot of new friends and all my teachers at orientation. i was expecting for all the teachers to be really harsh and talk a lot, but they were very welcoming and really helped me be able to adjust to the new school!! so technically yesterday was my first real day, and again i did not expect it to be how it was. That morning, i was very anxious and ready ti go to school. I wasn't 100% sure what to expect, but i had an idea. i thought i was going to get loads of homework and all of the teachers were just going to lecture, but instead all my teachers were engaged with me and my classmates and it made me feel really excited! i really enjoyed all the subjects and i was glad that i had aged group of friends before coming to school. i am excited to continue on this school year!!
