population pyramids

population pyramids:
-> we use populations pyramids to anywise growth (or decline) of fertility, mortality, and a lot of immigration in all the different cities
-> males are always on the left of the charts
-> there are more women over the age of 80 than men
-> when we are talking about nations, there are three basic shapes:
1. the christmas tree- usually a developing nation; growth rates are slow, high birth rate, very short life expectancy such as namibia and bangladesh
2. the box- developing nation, slow growth; low infant mortality but slow population growth but they have a long life expectancy in countries such as sweeten and the USA
3. the cup- developed nation, negative growth; low birth rate, shrinking populations but yet still have a long life expectancy in places like italy and japan

-> ann arbor, michigan: very weird set up because there are barely any at the bottom or the top (older people and younger people) but there are a lot in the middle ( middle aged) because this is the location of university if michigan which is a huge campus with a lot of student and teachers.
-> for bragg, north carolina: nobody lives here past the age 45 because this is the military base and people usually are younger when living here and after 45 usually leave the military to hometowns.

10/29/18

today in class we did not learn anything new. we reviewed what we went over last week in class and also talked about the CIA homework that we were suppose to do one the weekend. we then went to talk about our final quarter grade and if we had any issues with it. the quarter ends on wednesday and i am ok with my grade, but i feel like i could have done better. i am not so sure how much longer i will be in this class, as mr. ireton and my counselor think that i could use the extra success skills class which requires me to take one less course. we will see what happens.

CIA

5 facts from CIA:
-      Brazil is 61.1% forest:  this is interesting because i didn't realize this since most of the places around brazil are not forest. thats a cool fact. Their main religion is 64% roman catholic which is surprising. this is surprising because most of the places far away from the states is all jewish or muslim etc.
-        Canada has 6 time zones. i was very surprised when i she this fact because i didnt realize that it went across that far. this was fascinating to me. The Virgin Islands are twice the size of Washington DC. that is honestly not that big. the whole entire U.S virgin islands are only two times one small part of the united states.  Aruba doesn’t have an military officers, they mainly rely on the netherlands. this was actually very surprising because from what i have heard in the past, aruba is a very criminal or a place with a lot of drugs. honestly, i would be a little scared to be in a place without military figures in case something were to happen.

more measurements of population:
-> net migration rate: the difference between the number of persons entering the country each year
-> an access of persons entering the country is known as net Immigration
-> an access of persons exiting from the country is known as net emigration

why do people migrate?
-push forces
1. civil war
2. environmental degradation
3. unemployment or underemployment
4. religious or ethnic persecution

-pull forces
1. better economic opportunity
2. better health services
3. religious freedom
4. political freedom

10/23/18

Life expectancy: the average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year

High: Monaco (89.52 total; 85.63 men; 93.58 women)
#42: United states (79.68 total; 77.32 men; 81.97 women)
Low: chad (49.81 total; 48.64 men; 51.03 women)

èWoman live longer than men in most places. This is a factual thing. this is true for many reasons; one being the military or other types of state or country service. More men are involved in those things than woman. This puts them more at risk to get hurt and/ or die. Also, most women get checked out often. They have a lot of doctors and are always constantly getting checked up on. Guys are more reckless and are usually involved in a lot of things that are ore dangerous. Men usually preform more dangerous jobs.

èCrude birthrate: numbers of births per 1,000 of the population

èCrude death rate: number of deaths per 1,000 of the population

Rate of natural increase (RNI):
1.    Produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate
2.    This gives us the annual natural growth rate- in percentage form for each country/area

DON’T FORGET ABOUT MIGRATION

Net migration rate: the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year

An excess of persons entering the country is net immigration

·     Written as a positive number
·     Example: a. Canada has 5.65 migrants per 1,000 of the population
                 b. united states: 2.45 (3.62 in 2015)

an excess of persons leaving the country in net immigration

·     Written in a negative number
·     Example: Mexico: -1.68 migrants per 1,000 population

èWhat happens when we start to run out of food and water?
èWhat happens when we start to run out of jobs for all of these people?

Today in class we mostly discussed how the population of our country and our world are drowning really fast. The population in china is over 3 billion more than the population that we have here in the united states. And this is even after they had child limits which means that each family is only allowed to have a certain amount of kids due to the size of the population.

so today we took a test in human geography. i feel like i was some what prepared, but come to see my score, i was not prepared at all. my grade was not to my satisfaction at all and i was pretty disappointed, as i studied but not enough of the right stuff which was the majority of the test. Mr. Schick, being the kind man that he is, offered an option for me to be able to retake the test to see if i could get a higher score. he then proceeded to tell me that he would give me a passing grade no matter what.(so a 70%) i will make sure to study really hard this weekend in order to get that good grade to give my grade a push up. this relieved a lot of my stress as the quarter is coming to an end and my grades need to get up.

going over review for the test

today in class we didn't really have anything new taught to us. we didn't have much to write down for notes because the whole class was basically just review for our upcoming test on Friday, October 19. i do have some notes from class which are just key points and things that we really need to make sure we know for the test. Mr. Schick also informed us that this test would be an open map test, meaning we are allowed to use our maps as resourceful helpers during the test. that also mans that i need to make sure that everything on my map is in the correct place and is labeled right. that is important because if they are wrong than that means it will be wrong on the test.

scales:
1. ratio scale: example= 1:24,000
2. graphic scale: example= 1 inch is 200 miles

time zone practice:
1. 12 AM in Bel Air= 6 AM in Chicago
2. 12 AM in Baltimore= 2 AM in San Fransisco
3. 12 PM in Baltimore= 2 AM in South Korea
4. 10:15 PM in Aberdeen= 4:15 PM in Germany

10/9/18

Why is each point on the earth important?
-      Culture…is the body of customary beliefs, material traits, and social forms that together constitute the distinct tradition of a group of people.
-      Origin…of the word, culture, is the Latin cultist, which means “to care for”

Region of culture:
Geographer’s study both of these definitions:
-      Geographer’s study why the customary ideas, beliefs and values of a people produce a distinctive culture in a particular place.
-      Especially important cultural values derive from a group’s language, religion, ethnicity

àthe second element of culture of interest is production of material wealth such as food, clothing, and shelter that humans need I order to be able to survive and thrive

Why are the different places similar?
-      Scale, scale, and connections help geographers explain why similarities among places and regions do not at all result from coincidences.

-      Scale is the relationship between the portion of the earth being studied and earth as a whole. Globalization: is the force or process that involves the entire world and results in making something worldwide in scope.

regions!!

region: a unique area
- geographers identify three types of regions

  1. formal region: an area which everyone shares in common 1 or more distinctive characteristics --> example: common languages, economic activity or economic climate; the characteristics   maybe predominant rather than universal
  2. functional region( AKA hoaal region): an area that is organized around a node or focal point(s) -> the characteristics chosen to define a functional region dominates at a centeral focus or node and it also diminishes in importance outward.
  3. vermacular region( AKA perceptual): an area that people believe exists as their cultural identity   -> the american south is a region individuals recognize as having distinct environmental and cultural and economical preferences

Location can be identified in 3 ways:
1.    Place names
·     a toponym is the name given to a place on earth
