- geographers identify three types of regions
- formal region: an area which everyone shares in common 1 or more distinctive characteristics --> example: common languages, economic activity or economic climate; the characteristics maybe predominant rather than universal
- functional region( AKA hoaal region): an area that is organized around a node or focal point(s) -> the characteristics chosen to define a functional region dominates at a centeral focus or node and it also diminishes in importance outward.
- vermacular region( AKA perceptual): an area that people believe exists as their cultural identity -> the american south is a region individuals recognize as having distinct environmental and cultural and economical preferences
