notes from sep. 13

socrotes met with young students in workshops just outside the agora. his method: ask a series of questions to determine their underlying beliefs.

controversy: Athens was a great city which attracted brilliant thinkers. visitors from all over the world came that shared all of their knowledge. this was often at odds with traditional teaching that got people thinking and questioning. visitors from all over the world shared their knowledge.

the trial:
-->he was charged with two crimes:
1. corruption of Athens youth
2. impiety( not believing in the gods of the state)

--> his defense:
1. "its my job to be gadfly to the lazy, sluggish horse that is Athens."
2.  "i should actually be rewarded with free dinners for life."

--> how this all worked out for him:
1. a jury of 500 male citizens found him guilty in 279
2. sentenced to death by drinking poison and hemlock
3. he had the opportunity to escape but he refused

socrates tried to prove his loyalty to the athenian democracy by not escaping when he had the chance. they tried to make socrates look like how important he was.

an idiot in athenian democracy was someone who was characterized by self centeredness and concerned almost exclusively with private and public affairs.
